What is a URL?

URL or Uniform Resource Locator is the address of a web page.

Its a fancy term for the web address. A website url will consist of the protocal, the domain and the directory and page.

All web based pages use the HTTP protocal unless they are secure they use HTTPS. So that is nothing you need to know other than the url must start with http://.

The next part is the domain name, such as bumblebeeworks.com or yourname.com.

The last part is the sub directory and the actual page name. In the case of this page it resides at /webtips/url.html

The full url of this page is http://bumblebeeworks.com/url.html

We are all used to the format, so its nothing new. It is just putting a name on the web addresses we have been surfing for many years.
